Intramuros is the place to start, a walled Spanish colonial district where kalesa carriages still clatter past San Agustin Church and Fort Santiago.
Beyond the old walls, Manila turns modern fast: rooftop bars in Makati, malls the size of small towns, and a bay that turns orange at sunset from almost any waterfront spot. It's a rough, layered city, and a day or two here sets up everything that follows.

Cebu mixes history with beach time better than most Philippine islands.
Magellan's Cross marks where Christianity first landed in the country back in 1521, a short walk from the Basilica del Santo Niño and Fort San Pedro.
Cross the bridge to Mactan Island for the afternoon, where Lapu-Lapu, the local chief who defeated Magellan, is honored with a monument on the very spot.
From there, it's a short boat ride to snorkeling spots like Hilutungan Marine Sanctuary, coral reefs close enough to reach before lunch.

El Nido sits at the tip of Palawan, ringed by limestone cliffs that drop straight into the water.
Island hopping here means kayaking into the Big Lagoon, ducking through a narrow gap in the rock to reach the Secret Lagoon, and snorkeling over reefs at Shimizu Island.
Most days end on a beach with a name like Seven Commando or Hidden, and most of them live up to it.

Bohol packs a lot into a small island.
The Chocolate Hills are over a thousand cone-shaped mounds that turn brown in the dry season, best seen from the viewing deck near Carmen. Nearby, the Tarsier Sanctuary protects one of the world's smallest primates, a creature so small and skittish that visitors are asked to keep their distance and voices down.
Round out the day with a Loboc River cruise, or head out to Pamilacan Island, where former whale hunters now guide boats out to spot dolphins and, with luck, whales.

Boracay is small, and White Beach is the reason people keep coming back: four kilometers of fine, powder-soft sand that squeaks underfoot.
Days here are unstructured on purpose, swim, paddleboard, try parasailing, or just watch the sunset turn the sky the shade of orange Boracay is known for.
Climb Mount Luho for a wider view of the island, or stay on the sand and let the days blur together.
