Why Vinicunca Looks Like a Rainbow

Red comes from iron oxide, green from chlorite, yellow from iron sulfide, brown from magnesium-rich rocks, white from quartz sandstone, and purple from goethite and oxidized limonite. The Best Time to Visit Rainbow Mountain

The best time to visit Rainbow Mountain is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to September. At this time, with less rain, the mountain is drier, and its color appears more vivid. Please note that June, July, and August are considered the peak season, meaning there are more crowds and higher prices.

If you visit during the rainy season (from November to March), be aware of muddy paths, but Vinicunca has a special freshness after being washed by the rain. It's advisable to carry a raincoat, wear waterproof hiking shoes, and pay attention to the weather conditions in advance.

Where is Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain is located in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru, near Pitumarca, about 140 kilometers from Cusco. Its altitude is about 5,200 meters (17,060 feet). Getting there usually involves a 3.5-hour drive from Cusco, followed by a walk to the mountain's foot.

How to Get to Rainbow Mountain

Most people choose to join a tour to Vinicunca due to the high altitude and other reasons. However, if you prefer to go there on your own, that's also an option. You can travel by bus or car, and please note that there's no direct public transportation all the way to Vinicunca.

If you choose to take the bus, you'll first need to catch a bus from Avenida Tomasa Tito in Cusco heading to Checacupe. This journey takes about 2 hours and costs around 2 dollars. Upon arriving in Checacupe, transfer to a taxi to reach the starting point.

If you are driving by yourself, you can head directly to Rainbow Mountain's foot. Along Highway 3S to Checacupe, then switch to Highway 124. The drive is roughly 3 hours.

How Long to Spend on Hiking

A trip to Rainbow Mountain usually takes a full day, and it's best to start as early as possible. There are two main hiking routes:

Route 1: Cusipata - Phulawasipata

This is the route most people choose. You'll depart from Cusco, transfer at Cusipata, and then head to Phulawasipata to begin your hike. This route is a 7-kilometer (about 4.3 miles) round trip, with the one-way hike taking approximately 1.5 hours.

Route 2: Checacupe - Pitumarca - Kayrawiri

This route is less crowded and has more transfers. From Cusco, take a bus to Checacupe, then transfer to Pitumarca, and finally take a taxi from there to Kayrawiri, which is the starting point for this hike. This route covers about 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) round trip, with a one-way hiking time of roughly 2.5 hours.

Please be aware that the exact time spent on the routes can vary depending on your fitness level and pace.

Cusco provides many accommodation options and comprehensive facilities. Staying here for 2 to 3 days also helps you adjust to the high altitude and reduce the possibility of altitude sickness during your hike to Rainbow Mountain.

Checacupe is closer to the mountain's trailhead and offers a peaceful atmosphere. Plus, you can also explore the local bridges built during different periods, feeling the changes over time.

For other choices, Cusipata and Pitumarca are good, too, as they are pretty convenient for an early start to Rainbow Mountain the next day.
