In this guide, we'll walk you through the game show schedules, tips, transportation, and a sample Tokyo itinerary. Let the TGS highlight your September trip to Japan, full of nijigen fun and experience.

Why Visit the Tokyo Game Show (TGS)

Simply speaking, the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) is an annual video game trade show where gaming developers gather together (including those giants from Nintendo, Sony, Capcom, Sega, and Square Enix), launch their new trailers and techniques firsthand, as well as the upcoming game demos open to the public, which are hard to resist for most hardcore gamers.

TGS is also okay for common visitors, even if you are not that "game-loving": elaborate booths for esports showcases, and live stage presentations with cosplay and anime culture, a true energetic visual feast that you can take as part of a wider Tokyo trip.

TGS is Best for Visitors Who:

  • comfortable with large crowds, long queues, and high-energy environments
  • appealing to JRPG games, anime, manga, VTuber, and cosplay
  • in the younger generation that is full of energy
  • traveling with elder kids & teens

When is the Tokyo Game Show 2026

The Tokyo Game Show in 2026 runs from September 17 to 21, and is open to the public from September 19 to 21. The TGS 2026 is also the 30th anniversary, with a longer 5-day exhibition for your nonstop play.

Tokyo Game Show 2026 Schedule

September Visitors Opening Crowd
17 to 18 (Business Day) Industry only 10 am to 5 pm -
19 to 20 (Public Day) General public 9:30 am to 5 pm ★★★★★
21 (Public Day) General public 9:30 am to 4 pm ★★★

Pick the last day (September 21, Monday) of TGS sightseeing if you are looking for relatively fewer crowds and shorter lines to try the demo. However, most exclusive products and items are sold out on the last day. Join the first day exhibition if the passionate fan atmosphere is the key you are looking for.

How to Get to the Tokyo Game Show

The Tokyo Game Show is held at Makuhari Messe (in Chiba), and Kaihin Makuhari is the closest station.

It usually takes about a 40-minute drive from Tokyo to the convention center. Or, take advantage of the direct JR Keiyo Line from Tokyo Station to Kaihin Makuhari (in about 30 minutes), plus another 10-minute walk to the game show center.

Also, please note that there is a 10-minute walking distance from Tokyo Station to the JR Keiyo Line platform.

Can Anyone Go to the Tokyo Game Show

Yes, the Tokyo Game Show is open to the general public on later dates (September 19 to 21, 2026), including international visitors who don't work in the gaming industry. After the first 2 days reserved for business and media attendees, everyone can visit the TGS on the public days with a ticket.

Missed out on tickets? Don't worry, you can still follow the latest announcements through online livestreams on YouTube, X, Twitch, and TikTok.

How to Get the TGS Tickets

For international visitors, please focus on the Overseas Ticket page (on sale from mid-July) of the Tokyo Game Show official website, which is Visa and Mastercard available without the local accounts and phone number verification.

Consider a fast ticket (offers quick entry, however, lottery sales only) if you are a hardcore gamer looking for shorter lines and more demos to play. And the single-day admission ticket (usually more manageable if purchased in advance) is usually enough for your simple experience.

Note: Creating accounts beforehand since the fast ticket disappears within minutes after sales open. Or consider a Japan tour including the Tokyo Game Show with Odynovo, let our travel experts handle all the booking and itinerary. Please feel free to contact us.

Best Things to Experience at TGS

Theme-park-like Decorations

Booths at TGS often feel closer to theme-park attractions or live entertainment spaces than standard expo stands, with giant screens, theatrical lighting, music, stage hosts, and elaborate themed decorations. Even walking through the halls of Makuhari Messe can feel like entering a celebration of gaming culture.

Upcoming Game Demos

Trying upcoming games before release is naturally a core part of the Tokyo Game Show experience, and that's why there are always long lines for hands-on demos unavailable elsewhere, particularly those from Capcom and Sega. Paired with lining gamers' exciting discussions of strategies, reactions, and expectations for the best fan atmosphere.

Cosplay & Stage Events

Cosplay areas, character merchandising, anime and game crossover booths, and themed photo spots create an environment that is well-tied to the world created by gaming developers. As well as live presentations, including developer talks, esports showcases, music performances, livestream productions, and celebrity appearances for your deeper immersion.

Where to Stay During the Tokyo Game Show

In general, stay around Kaihin Makuhari Station if you are seeking more chances or days for game demo playing and goods hunting. And consider Tokyo your second base when sightseeing is the main part of your Japan tour.

It is important to reiterate that TGS is held at Chiba, about a 40-minute car or train ride from Tokyo, and maybe longer during the morning rush hours.

Staying near Makuhari Messe is about pure convenience. Within walking distance of the venue, it can be the best choice if you plan to attend multiple days, arrive early for queues, or simply want to avoid crowded evening trains. And still book early since hotels in this area book out quickly once TGS dates are announced.

While looking for more restaurants and nightlife options, especially when the TGS is a simple part of your Tokyo itinerary, staying around Tokyo Station would be better to reach both the game show venue and those popular districts like Shinjuku and Shibuya.

Sample Tokyo Itinerary With TGS

It is a good idea to combine your Tokyo journey with TGS, which can be a good extension experience of Akihabara, Harajuku, and Shibuya. Also, the Tokyo Game Show is better suited to the end of the itinerary, as it can be quite a physically demanding bomb.

Route: Shinjuku→Shibuya→Asakusa→Akihabara→Odaiba→Chiba

You can spend 3 to 5 days enjoying your classic Tokyo sightseeing first, from the iconic Meiji Shrine in Shinjuku to the bustling Shibuya Crossing. See the trendy fashion in Harajuku and follow the local prayer at Sensoji Temple. Then leave some time for those nijigen fun at Akihabara, and take a train ride to Odaiba if there is more time available. And finally, head to Chiba early for your full (or more) day Tokyo Game Show experience.

More Tips to Enjoy the Tokyo Game Show

  • Arrive early, yet still expect long queues. For major publishers or highly anticipated games, it is completely normal to queue 1 to 3 hours for a demo that lasts only 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Consider the fast ticket for priority entry.
  • Comfortable shoes are arguably more important than almost anything else you pack. There will be more walking and standing than you expected.
  • Choose only 1 to 3 must-play demos per day rather than trying to chase every major title. Sometimes, smaller indie or mid-sized booths will offer a better experience.
  • Bring something to pass this waiting simulator: a power bank, headphones & handheld games (better offline).
  • Mobile signal and internet can become unreliable inside the halls. Apps may become slow or inconsistent as crowds grow. So, screenshot the maps, schedules, and pre-download tickets, QR codes beforehand.
  • Consider packing some quick convenience-store food before entering, rather than during the crowded lunch period.
  • Prepare some cash for food, drinks, or exclusive items, which is very helpful when mobile networks crash, and some vendors do not have card machines.
