Sacsayhuaman Travel Guide: All You Need to Know

If Cusco is a puma, Sacsayhuaman is the head of the puma. Behind this vivid metaphor, this military fortress hides many secrets: What does Sacsayhuamn mean? What was this site used for? What can be seen at this archaeological site? Are you also curious about these? Read the following content to dispel your doubts and start your journey to Peru.

Sacsayhuaman is one of the most astonishing ruins of the Inca Empire and was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. What does "Sacsayhuaman" mean? Its name is derived from Quechua, pronounced similar to the English word "sexy woman", meaning "Satisfied Falcon".

The site was originally built in the 15th century as a military fortress, a religious ceremony site, and a granary. The most astonishing feature is its huge trapezoidal walls, precisely constructed with huge stones weighing tens of tons, showcasing the outstanding architectural skills of the Incas. On a grand scale and with an exquisite layout, you can also see structures such as squares, altars, gateways, steps, towers, aqueducts, caves, and terraced fields.

In addition, Alpacas and Andean eagles often appear, bringing vitality to ancient buildings and offering you a unique cultural experience.

SacsayhuamanSacsayhuaman

Sacsayhuaman is located in the north of Cusco (at an altitude of 3,400 meters) in Peru. Situated on a hill at an altitude of 3,700 meters, it's surrounded by the continuous Andes Mountains, offering a panoramic view of Cusco as well as a distant view of the magnificent mountain scenery.

The unique geographical location reflects the Incas' worship of the sacred and showcases their outstanding military defense vision.

Best Time: May to October (Dry Season in Peru)

Opening Time: from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM all year round

The best time to visit Sacsayhuaman is during the dry season in Peru (May to October). This period has a pleasant climate to enjoy outdoor activities, and you can also encounter the traditional Inca celebrations. On every June 24th, the Sun Festival (Inti Raymi) takes place here, where the grandest annual sun god worship ceremony is held. Warachikuy in September is a vibrant coming-of-age celebration. Note that check the specific dates in advance.

Inti Raymi

Sacsayhuaman is the core venue for the ceremonies of Inti Raymi, one of the most important traditional festivals in Peru. Every June 24th (the Winter Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere), thousands of tourists and locals gather at this Inca site to watch the grand worship ceremony. The priests, dressed in traditional costumes, prayed and offered sacrifices to the sun god Inti in the ancient Quechua language (the performances do not involve real sacrifices). As the climax of the festival, the huge stone walls and vast squares of Sacsayhuaman allow you to deeply feel the Inca civilization's devout worship of the sun.

Warachikuy

Usually held in September, it is the coming-of-age ceremony of the Incas. All teenagers aged 17 or 18 must face multiple challenges, including physical tests, fighting, and games. Those who succeed will be awarded the "wara" belt, a symbol of adulthood, and receive recognition of victory and respect from others. You can enjoy traditional war dance performances and have the opportunity to try out the improved competitive events, which are full of fun.

Yes, a ticket is required to enter Sacsayhuaman, but it is not an exclusive entrance. You need to purchase the Cusco Tourist Ticket (Full Ticket or Partial Ticket), which includes multiple attractions in and around Cusco. The table shows you some essential information about Sacsayhuaman tickets.

The Cyclopean Walls

These serrated giant city walls are built with huge stones, and the largest one weighing 125 tons, which can be regarded as a wonder of ancient engineering. The most amazing thing is that there is no need for mortar between the stones, fitting together perfectly with just precise cutting. You'll feel the exquisite craftsmanship of Inca artisans, because even a blade could hardly be inserted into the crevices of stones.

The Suchana

The Suchana, also known as the Rodadero or Slide Rock. This natural diorite slope was used by Inca children as a slide. Its surface became extremely smooth due to long-term friction. Archaeologists speculate that it was originally the remains of a quarry, and today you can still enjoy the fun of the "Inca slide".

The Inca Throne

Also known as K'usilluc Jink'ian, this elaborately carved rock seat was very likely the place where the rulers held ceremonies. The stone steps and platforms around the throne are well-preserved, and you can clearly imagine the scene of the priests making pilgrimages here in the past.

Chincanas

Chincanas is a series of natural underground tunnels located beneath Cusco and Sacsayhuaman. It's believed that the tunnels lead to the Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), but the explorers never reached the end. Today, the open area is about 12 meters (40 feet) long, and you can find the entrance is hidden near a rock landslide.

The Towers

The three towers, Muyucmarca, Sallaqmarca, and Paucamarcawith, only remain the foundations. They once served functions such as astronomical observation, military defense, and religious ceremonies. I believe that astronomy enthusiasts are interested in exploring them.
