Morocco's Rose Festival is held in the town of Kelaat M'Gouna. This town is the "Rose Capital of Morocco," located in the Dades Valley (also known as the "Rose Valley").
It is a bit far from Morocco's imperial cities like Marrakech or Fes. But it can be easily combined with your Sahara Desert tour, like setting Kelaat M'Gouna as a stop between Merzouga and Skoura or Ouarzazate.
- Kelaat M'Gouna - Merzouga: About 270 km (5-hour drive)
- Kelaat M'Gouna - Skoura: About 50 km (1-hour drive)
- Kelaat M'Gouna - Ouarzazate: About 94 km (1.5-hour drive)

What to Do at the Morocco Rose Festival?
Immerse Into the Festive Atmosphere
When you walk through the streets of Kelaat M'gouna, the cheerful rhythm of traditional songs and dances will fascinate you. Berbers dressed in gorgeous national costumes, dancing in circles, and here are traditional instruments playing ancient melodies.
The climax of the festival is the grand parade of floats, usually on the last day. Floats decorated with pink roses slowly pass by on the street, and the Rose Queen wears a wreath and waves to people with a smile. The air is filled with the fragrance of flowers, and you'll be intoxicated in this dreamy celebration.
See the Birth of Fragrance
Go to the local rose distillery, you'll witness how the pink petals turn into precious rose water and essential oils. The air is full of sweet floral fragrance, so that you feel like you are at a feast for the sense of smell.
In addition to the rose distillery, you can also visit the local brewery or handmade perfume workshop to learn how the Berbers use the gifts of nature to create kinds of amazing fragrance products. If you are a fragrance lover, it will definitely be your place of inspiration!
Pick Roses to Enjoy the Harvest
If all the roses have not been picked during the festival, you will have the opportunity to walk into the rose fields and experience a real rose harvest. The morning sun shines on the sea of flowers, and the air is fresh and moist. Learning from the locals to gently pick the delicate flowers, you can be pleasantly surprised to find that your hands become extra smooth. It is a gentle gift from the earth, making your journey full of poetry and memories.
Strolling in the Rose Fields to Embrace Pink World
Dades Valley, also known as the Rose Valley, has rose fields spread along both sides of the river. Although most of the roses were picked during the festival, you can still see unpicked flowers dotted in the fields. The delicate little Persian roses sway slightly in the sun, and the air is filled with a faint rose scent.
What's more, the date trees, orange trees, and fig trees along the way still add natural beauty to this land.
In addition, try some charming and different experiences: stop and make a natural sachet with rose petals, or weave a rose wreath. When the sun sets, find a quiet corner to sit down and quietly appreciate the softness and poetry of this land.
Treasure Hunt in the Rose Market
Rose Market in Morocco
The rose water in Kelaat M'Gouna is of excellent quality, and rose products are one of the most distinctive souvenirs in Morocco. In the open-air market or the local rose distillery, you can buy pure rose water, rose essential oil, rose soap, skin care cream, dried flowers and other rose products. If you are willing to stop and talk with them, you can learn how to use rose water for beauty care or make a cup of sweet rose tea with dried rose petals.
Take in the Beauty of the Atlas Mountains
The Dades Valley is surrounded by the majestic Atlas Mountains. The rolling mountains show magnificent colors against the backdrop of the morning light or sunset, and complement each other with the pink rose fields, like a vivid picture. When in the festive market or strolling on the valley trails, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of nature.
Where to Stay During the Rose Festival?
It's recommended to stay in Skoura or Ouarzazate rather than Kelaat M'Gouna itself.
Accommodation in Kelaat M'Gouna is quite limited and generally simple. Most options are small guesthouses or local boutique kasbah-style hotels, typically at a 3-star level or below.
With just a short drive, you can enjoy much better comfort and service (about 1 hour to Skoura; 1.5 hours to Ouarzazate). These areas offer a wider range of accommodations, including 4- to 5-star hotels and even luxury properties.
If you prefer to stay closer for easier access to the festival and a more immersive experience, the Dades Valley is also a great option. Located just 30-40 minutes away, it offers several good-quality 4-star hotels and boutique kasbahs.
Travel Tips for the Morocco Rose Festival
Plan and Book Early
Kelaat M'Gouna is a small and charming town with limited capacity, especially during the festival period. Although we recommend staying in nearby areas, accommodation options there are also relatively limited. Booking early helps ensure you secure your preferred hotel as well as guide and driver services.
Set the Right Expectations for the Festival
The Rose Festival remains a very authentic and local celebration, with minimal commercialization. Facilities in the area are still quite basic, which is part of its charm but may not suit everyone.
Since the festival celebrates the rose harvest, its exact dates are highly dependent on weather conditions and are often announced only shortly in advance. This means your travel dates may not perfectly align with the main celebrations.
That said, there's no need to worry too much. You might miss the Rose Queen pageant and parade, but you can still enjoy the stunning scenery of Rose Valley if you travel between late April and early May. Activities we mentioned, such as rose picking and visiting distillation cooperatives, are also available.
Dress Colorfully Like Locals
Locals like to wear colorful clothes to celebrate the Rose Festival. You can choose bright colors such as pink, red, and gold, or buy Moroccan scarves and headscarves in the market to integrate into the festival atmosphere!
