Tohoku & Hokkaido Cherry Blossom Journey 2026

After arriving in Tokyo, board the Shinkansen to Sendai, a smooth ride through countryside landscapes. Once you arrive, no sightseeing is planned, giving you time to rest after the long journey. Take a quiet evening walk if you like, enjoying the mild air and the soft scent of blossoms already floating in the streets.

Today you head north toward Aomori. Stop at Lake Towada, a scenic caldera lake shared by Aomori and Akita. Springtime brings clear skies and blossoms around the lakeside. Then visit Oirase Gorge, one of Japan's most beautiful river valleys. A walk along part of the trail lets you see waterfalls, fresh green leaves, and blooming flowers. This mix of water, rocks, and spring scenery makes it a refreshing highlight. Stay overnight in Aomori.

Take a morning train to Hakodate. In the afternoon, visit Goryokaku Park, a star-shaped fort now filled with cherry trees. From Goryokaku Tower, you can see the whole star design surrounded by pink blossoms. Later, ride the ropeway up Mount Hakodate for the famous evening view of the city lights. This combination of spring flowers and night scenery makes Hakodate very memorable.

Travel south to Matsumae, the only traditional castle town in Hokkaido. Visit Matsumae Castle and its surrounding park, which has over 10,000 cherry trees of many varieties. The long blooming season means blossoms can often be enjoyed here even after other regions have finished. Walk around the castle grounds and enjoy local festival stalls if they are open. Stay overnight nearby or return to Hakodate depending on schedule.

Make your way toward Lake Toya, a scenic lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. After arrival, check into a lakeside hot spring hotel. Spend the afternoon relaxing, with time for a walk along the lake promenade. The still waters and surrounding mountains create a calm spring atmosphere. In the evening, enjoy a traditional hot spring bath and dinner at your hotel.

Begin with a short cruise on Lake Toya to enjoy views of the islands and surrounding hills. Next, visit the Volcano Science Museum to learn about Mount Usu's eruptions and the lake's formation. In the afternoon, take the Usuzan Ropeway to the top of the volcano. From the observation points, you can see the lake, the ocean, and the steaming crater. Return to your hotel for another relaxing hot spring night.

Head to Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido. Visit the Sapporo Clock Tower, one of the city's oldest landmarks. Walk through Odori Park, a long green space often lined with cherry blossoms in spring. Then visit Hokkaido Shrine, a popular place for spring hanami where families gather under the trees. End the day exploring the city center or enjoying Sapporo's local food.

Take a short trip to Otaru, a historic port town. Stroll along the Otaru Canal, lined with old warehouses and spring flowers. Visit Kitaichi Glass to see the town's famous glassware, and the Otaru Music Box Museum with its charming collection. Try local seafood or sweets before returning to Sapporo. Spend your final evening shopping or relaxing in the city.

At the scheduled time, transfer to New Chitose Airport for your flight home or to the next destination.
