What's the Best Time for A Red Sea Holiday
Egypt's Red Sea coast is one of the world's most famous beach and underwater destinations. With warm water, diverse marine life, and sunny skies most of the year, you really can enjoy this coastline anytime. But depending on your priorities, like weather comfort, diving/snorkeling conditions, crowds, or budget, some months simply make more sense than others. Here's how to plan your best Red Sea holiday at the right time.
Best Time for a Red Sea Holiday by Weather
If you are looking for pleasant weather, ideal beach conditions, and comfortable sightseeing, October to April is the best time for a Red Sea vacation.
During these months, daytime temperatures are warm but not overwhelming, usually ranging from 22-28°C (72-82°F). The sunshine is gentle enough for long beach days, while evenings are cool and comfortable.
This period is also considered the best time to visit Egypt overall. If it's your first trip to the country, traveling during these months makes exploring classic destinations like Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan much easier. Ending your journey with a relaxing Red Sea stay is a perfect way to round out the trip.

Best Time for Diving/Snorkeling in the Red Sea
The Red Sea is famous for its rich underwater life, and the good news is that diving and snorkeling are possible year-round.
That said, if you are looking for the best overall diving experience, September to November is highly recommended. By this time, the intense summer heat has eased, while the sea remains comfortably warm at around 25-27°C (77-81°F). These months are especially popular with experienced divers, particularly in Sharm El Sheikh, Ras Mohammed National Park, and the Straits of Tiran.
What about diving during the summer months from June to August? While this period is often considered the least ideal time for an Egypt tour due to high temperatures on land, it's actually one of the best seasons for Red Sea diving. Seawater temperatures reach 27-30°C (81-86°F), allowing for long, comfortable dives. These months also offer better chances of encountering dolphins and sharks. A thin 3 mm wetsuit or shorty is usually enough, and less weight is required.
From December to May, the water becomes cooler, averaging 21-23°C (69-73°F). For comfort, especially on longer dives, a 5-7 mm wetsuit, along with a neoprene vest or hood, is recommended.

Peak Season in the Red Sea
There are generally two peak seasons for a Red Sea vacation: July to August and December to February.
July and August are peak months mainly for domestic travelers and visitors from the Middle East. While sightseeing elsewhere in Egypt can feel intense due to the heat, the Red Sea coast remains attractive thanks to sea breezes, resort pools, and water activities. Resorts are lively, especially in Hurghada, and family-friendly all-inclusive hotels tend to book up quickly.
December to February is the international high season. Travelers from Europe and North America escape the winter cold for sunshine and warm seas. The weather is mild and pleasant, ideal for beach stays. During this period, popular resorts in Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada see higher demand, and prices for flights and hotels are usually at their highest.
If you prefer good weather with fewer crowds and better value, the months of September to November and March to April often offer the best balance.
Cheapest Time for A Red Sea Holiday
The best months for lower prices are usually May, June, and September. During these months, you can often see price drops of 30-40% compared to peak season on dive packages, resort stays, and liveaboard trips. Crowds are thinner too, meaning more space on the reefs and quieter beaches.
The trade-off is that air temperatures can be high, sometimes reaching 35-40°C (95-104°F) on land. Activities like full-day desert tours or inland excursions are more comfortable when scheduled in the early morning or late afternoon.
Will Ramadan Affect My Red Sea Holiday?
Mostly not in resort areas.
Ramadan is an important cultural and religious period in Egypt, and depending on the year (it moves earlier each year on the lunar calendar), daily life in many cities slows down. However, Red Sea resort towns are largely focused on international tourism, so the effect is minimal:
- Hotels, beaches, and water activities continue as usual.
- At all-inclusive resorts, alcohol service and dining inside the resort generally remain available.
- Restaurants in tourist areas may adjust opening hours, but they rarely close completely.
In practice, we host many travelers during Ramadan, and feedback consistently shows that once they reach the Red Sea coast, the effect of Ramadan is almost "zero."
So, When Is the Best Time to Visit?
Let's make a simple breakdown:
- For perfect weather & classic Egypt tours: October to April
- For the best diving & snorkeling: September to November and June to August
- For crowds & good value: May, June, and September
