Where to Stay in Luxor: East or West Bank?

Luxor is often described as an open-air museum, and for good reason. It is a must-visit on any Egypt tour and typically takes 2 to 3 days to explore. So, where is the best place to stay in Luxor, East Bank or West Bank?

If it is your first time visiting, the East Bank is generally the best area to stay in Luxor thanks to its convenience, amenities, and hotel variety. In this guide, I will explain why choose the East Bank, and share some hotel recommendations to help you find the perfect place to stay.

East Bank: Karnak & Luxor Temples

Luxor Temple at NightLuxor Temple at Night

Staying on the East Bank puts you right next to Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, two of Egypt's most iconic landmarks.

The vast Karnak Temple gets an excellent sunrise view, while Luxor Temple has a wonderful view at sunset. It is one of the most important reasons I suggest you stay in the East Bank. Stay nearby, so you can easily enjoy them at their most beautiful moments without the rush.

West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple

The West Bank is where you will find ancient tombs hidden in desert hills. This side of Luxor was once known as the land of the dead.

Here you are closer to the Valley of the Kings, home to richly decorated tombs of legendary pharaohs like Tutankhamun. Nearby is the Valley of the Queens, which holds the tombs of royal wives and children.

Also on the West Bank is the remarkable Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, unlike any other Egyptian temple. It is a terraced, cliff-carved structure dedicated to Egypt's most famous female pharaoh, which is definitely worth a visit. By the way, the famous photo stop Colossi of Memnon is also in the West Bank.

That said, while these West Bank sites are absolutely worth seeing, they are only open during the daytime and are all easily reachable in a day trip from the East Bank.

The East Bank of Luxor offers a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, and shops. Whether you are in the mood for traditional Egyptian cuisine, fast food, or even Italian dishes, you'll find it here. For a taste of local flavor with great views, try Sofra Restaurant, known for its classic Egyptian dishes in a charming, historic setting. 1886 Restaurant at the Winter Palace is perfect for a fine dining experience, while Aisha Restaurant offers a cozy vibe with international options. You will also find plenty of convenience stores, souks, and places to enjoy a drink or dessert in the evening.

In contrast, the West Bank feels like a different world. It is much more peaceful and undeveloped, especially after sunset. Evening entertainment is limited, and a peaceful stroll along the Nile is likely your main evening activity. Dining options here are fewer and simpler, but some authentic local restaurants like Nile Valley Restaurant and Africa Restaurant offer delicious meals and friendly service. Just don't expect fancy settings or extensive menus.

In short, if you are looking for a wide range of dining options, easy access to shopping, local experiences, and a bit of nightlife, the East Bank is undoubtedly your best choice. The West Bank, on the other hand, is better suited for those who prefer a peaceful stay and don't mind quiet evenings without much to do after dark.

When it comes to accommodation, the East Bank of Luxor offers a much wider range of options, from budget-friendly stays to luxury five-star resorts. All the major international hotel chains in Luxor, like Sofitel, Hilton, and Steigenberger, are located on this side. They offer high-end comfort, Nile views, and resort-style amenities. You will also find plenty of mid-range hotels and boutique stays conveniently close to the temples and city center. If you are looking for comfort, modern amenities, and polished service, the East Bank is definitely the way to go.

Accommodation options on Luxor's West Bank are much more limited. You won't find international brands here, but authentic guesthouses, eco-lodges, and family-run accommodations instead. Amenities are usually basic, and service levels can vary. I do not have specific hotel recommendations here, as it tends to change frequently. But if you are drawn to this kind of local vibe and want to stay in the West Bank, just be sure to check recent reviews before booking.

Steigenberger Nile Palace

Perfectly situated on the Nile's edge in central Luxor, the Steigenberger Nile Palace is often commented on as "a true palace". It is offers all the modern comforts: air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and more. Many rooms feature private balconies with stunning views of the city, the Nile, or the distant mountains.

Another highlight: the hotel has its own boat dock, making it easy to arrange a relaxing sunset cruise on the Nile directly through the front desk.

Sofitel Winter Palace Luxor

If you are after a taste of old-world charm and royal grandeur, the Sofitel Winter Palace is it.

Built in 1886 and set in lush gardens right on the Nile, this iconic hotel once hosted the likes of Agatha Christie and various royals. While steeped in history, it is a full-service 5-star property with refined decor and excellent dining. The most important thing is that Sofitel Winter Palace has an unbeatable location - just steps from Luxor Temple.

Jolie Ville Resort & Spa Kings Island

If you want a relatively peaceful retreat but enjoy the convenience of the East Bank, take Jolie Ville Resort & Spa Kings Land into consideration.

Set on its own private island in the Nile, the property feels worlds away from the bustle of town, yet it's only 4 km from central Luxor. It has lush gardens, three pool areas, and family-friendly amenities that make it a top pick for those traveling with kids or simply wanting to unwind in nature. Complimentary shuttle service makes getting into town easy, and the serene river setting is perfect for watching sunrise or sunset.

You can travel between the East and West Banks of Luxor in two main ways:

  • By Road: Taking a car or taxi via the Luxor Bridge is a convenient option, especially if you are on a guided tour. However, travel time can be 30-40 minutes or more, depending on traffic and your destination.
  • By Boat: For a more scenic and authentic experience, many travelers prefer crossing the Nile by motorboat or public ferry. The ferry is frequent and very affordable - just a few Egyptian pounds. Motorboats are faster, slightly pricier, and can be easily arranged through your hotel or guide.

If you're arriving from Aswan or heading there next, you don't have to worry about choosing between the East or West Bank. Just book a Nile cruise!

This option is especially great for couples and first-time visitors, offering the best of both worlds: comfortable accommodation, included meals, and guided tours to major attractions.

Also, a cruise between Luxor and Aswan treats you to some of the best views in Egypt. Picture waking up to explore a new riverside town, enjoying guided tours during the day, and unwinding with a sunset on the deck. It will truly be a relaxing and magical way to travel.
