How to Plan a Trip to Egypt 2026
Pyramids, ancient temples, the crystal-clear Red Sea... There are many reasons why travelers are drawn to Egypt. At the same time, planning a trip there often comes with plenty of questions and hesitations.
After collecting the most common concerns I've been asked while tailoring Egypt tours for my customers, I put together this simple guide to help you plan a trip to Egypt smoothly and comfortably.
Choose the Right Time to Visit Egypt
As a desert country, choosing the right time to visit Egypt can make a big difference in your overall experience. The best time to visit Egypt is from November to March, when the weather is cool and pleasant for sightseeing. If your schedule matches this period, you can simply go for it.
During these months, daytime temperatures are usually mild, making it much more comfortable to explore the pyramids, temples, and other outdoor attractions without feeling exhausted by the heat.
The only downside is that this is Egypt's peak travel season, so hotels and flights are usually more expensive. Therefore, it is better to book early. Normally, booking 3-6 months in advance is recommended, especially if you are planning a trip to Egypt around the New Year holiday.
If you prefer a balance between good weather, fewer crowds, and more reasonable prices, April, May, June, September, and October are usually recommended. These months are hotter than winter, but still manageable for most travelers. You just need some smart planning, such as doing sightseeing early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
Summer, especially July and August, is the least recommended season because temperatures across the country become extremely high, particularly in southern Egypt, including Aswan and Luxor. On many days, temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F).
Still, if you can handle the heat, summer can offer a quieter and more budget-friendly travel experience.
Set a Proper Tour Length
Many travelers ask how many days they should spend in Egypt. In short, 10-12 days is the ideal tour length, as it gives you enough time to explore the country's major highlights without feeling too rushed.
With this amount of time, you can comfortably visit Cairo, enjoy a Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor, and then relax by the Red Sea. You will not need to rush through too many attractions each day and can still enjoy some leisure time.
If your schedule is tight, it is still recommended to spend at least 7 days in Egypt. This allows you to cover the essentials, including the pyramids in Cairo and the ancient temples of Luxor and Aswan, while keeping the pace manageable.
If you are planning to stay for more than 15 days, you will have the chance to enjoy a deeper and more unique experience. Besides the classic tourist route, you can explore extra places like Faiyum, Alexandria, Dendera, or Minya, or even combine Egypt with nearby destinations such as Jordan, Morocco, or Turkey for a broader Middle East journey.
List the Must-Go Places of Your Egypt Tour
While deciding how long to stay, choosing where to go should also be taken into consideration. Before building your itinerary, it is helpful to make a list of the places you truly do not want to miss.
For most first-time travelers, Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan are the absolute classics. Cairo is home to the iconic Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the new Grand Egyptian Museum. Luxor is filled with magnificent temples and ancient tombs like the Valley of the Kings. Aswan, on the other hand, has a much slower and more relaxing atmosphere, with beautiful Nile scenery and Nubian culture. If you prefer a more relaxing vacation after sightseeing, adding a few days by the Red Sea is highly recommended. Destinations like Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh are perfect for snorkeling, diving, or simply enjoying a beach resort.
For travelers with more time or specific interests, places like Abu Simbel, Alexandria, Faiyum, the White Desert, or Siwa Oasis can also add a more unique side of Egypt to your journey.
My suggestion is not to put too many destinations into one trip. Just focus on the places that match your interests most and leave some room to truly enjoy the experience. For example, if you are not particularly interested in temples, you can simply skip some and choose a few representative ones to visit.

Set the Budget for Your Egypt Tour
Although traveling in Egypt has become more expensive in recent years due to factors like rising fuel costs, it is still considered a very cost-rewarding destination compared with many other popular travel countries.
For example, with a budget of around USD 300 per person per day, you can already enjoy a relatively comfortable and high-quality experience, including 4-star hotels, a private guide, and private transportation. In comparison, the same budget in destinations like Italy or Japan may only cover mid-range hotels and public transportation.
Daily expenses in Egypt are also quite affordable. A simple vegetarian salad sandwich may cost around 35 Egyptian pounds (about USD 0.70), while a cappuccino is usually around 40-70 Egyptian pounds (USD 0.80-1.40). Of course, if you prefer fine dining or luxury hotels, costs can increase quickly, and meals at high-end restaurants may easily exceed USD 100 per person.
In general, Egypt is one of those destinations where you can still enjoy a very memorable travel experience without needing an extremely high budget.
Find a Tour Operator
It is highly recommended to find a tour operator to help you plan your itinerary, make reservations, and arrange guides and transportation. Not because I work in this field, but simply because Egypt is not the easiest destination to travel completely on your own.
For places like the Maldives or Mexico, you can often just book hotels online, arrange a few activities, and enjoy your vacation at your own pace. Egypt is a bit different. The attractions are spread far apart, which makes itinerary planning and transportation more complicated than many travelers expect. On top of that, many historical sites become far more meaningful when you visit them with a knowledgeable guide who can explain the stories behind them.
A good tour operator can make the whole trip much easier to manage. Instead of spending hours researching transportation, comparing hotels, figuring out attraction locations, and dealing with logistics, you can get quick professional advice. This is especially helpful for first-time visitors, families with children, or senior travelers.
Don't Be Too Anxious About Safety
Safety is probably one of the biggest concerns people have before traveling to Egypt. After all, the news and social media sometimes make the country sound more chaotic than it actually is.
But in reality, most travelers complete their Egypt trips smoothly and return home with wonderful memories.
The main tourist areas, such as Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and Hurghada, are generally well-managed and heavily tourism-oriented. Tourism is an important industry in Egypt, so security around major attractions, airports, hotels, and tourist transportation is usually quite visible.
As long as you follow normal travel precautions, Egypt is no more dangerous than many other popular destinations.
Of course, like traveling anywhere, it is still important to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas at night, and be careful with your belongings in crowded places.
Another thing many travelers mention is not safety itself, but the hassle from street vendors or overly enthusiastic sellers around tourist sites. Usually, a polite but firm "No, thank you" is enough.
Back to what was mentioned above, if you are traveling with a reliable tour operator, the whole experience often feels even easier and more comfortable. With proper planning, guided support, and realistic expectations, Egypt is far less intimidating than many people imagine before their trip.
Note: Avoid sensitive areas, such as the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula (near the border with Israel) and the western border with Libya.
