Thailand Full Moon Party is an all-night beach festival held on Haad Rin Beach, Koh Phangan, on the night of every full moon. It began in the 1980s as a small gathering: a few old hippies and backpackers strumming guitars and drinking beer. Nowadays, it's a crazy music paradise gathering people from all over the world.

Here, DJs play a wide range of electronic music to ignite your passion. There are fire dance performances, body painting, and bucket drinks. Most people are painted with UV paint or wear some kind of Full Moon Party T-shirt. They gather on the beach to party until sunrise (usually 6:00 AM), enjoying the vibrant atmosphere.

Since many important Buddhist festivals are based on lunar events and occur during the full moon, sometimes the Thailand Full Moon Party is held one day before or after the actual full moon. The following lists the dates for each month in 2025 and 2026.

UV Body Paint

The UV painting stations scattered all over the beach offer a variety of fluorescent paints and professional painting services. Artists can paint exquisite patterns on your body or you can create it yourself. Under the ultraviolet light, you will blend in with the party.

Bucket Drinks and Delicacies

Be sure to try the party's signature "beach bucket" - a special cocktail served in colorful small plastic buckets, usually a blend of Thai whisky, soda water and energy drinks. Along the beach, there are dozens of stalls offering chilled beers and Thai snacks to replenish your energy.

Beach Sunrise Experience

The party will last until the next morning, and you can witness the spectacular sight of the sun rising above the sea. After the revelry, sit quietly on the beach to enjoy the sunrise, bringing this crazy night to a perfect ending.

Celebration on New Year's Eve

If Thailand Full Moon Party happens to be during the New Year period, you can participate in special New Year's Eve activities. Countdown to the New Year under the full moon and enjoy the brilliant fireworks lighting up the night sky. You'll welcome the New Year in this unique way with friends from around the world.

Half Moon Party

Held every two weeks, the Half Moon Party is a two-day music celebration. On the first day, there is a full-day party at Harmony Beach Club, and on the second day, it moves to the mysterious Halfmoon Magical Forest for an all-night party.

It is smaller in scale and more intimate in atmosphere than the Full Moon Party. But is renowned for its excellent sound system, dazzling lighting art, and greater emphasis on music quality, making it a popular choice for electronic music fans seeking a more immersive experience.

Black Moon Party

Black Moon Party is held on every lunar new moon night at Baan Tai Beach. It is the smallest of the three, usually featuring only one DJ booth, with a more intimate and underground atmosphere. The music style of the party primarily features Trance and deep electronic music, attracting music fans who pursue a pure musical experience and possess a hippie spirit.

Koh Phangan currently has no airport. It is generally accessed by ferry from Surat Thani Province or the nearest islands of Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

From Surat Thani

It is the quickest and most commonly used route, and suitable for travelers flying in from Bangkok and other places. You first fly to Surat Thani Airport (URT), then take a shuttle bus to Donsak Pier and transfer to a ferry, with the whole journey taking about 2-3 hours.

From Koh Samui

The frequent boat schedules in Koh Samui make it very convenient. Take a speedboat or ferry from Nathon Pier or Mae Nam Pier, and you can reach Koh Phangan in about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

From Koh Tao

Koh Tao has a direct ferry service to Koh Phangan, with the journey taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. This route is an important link connecting the three Islands of the Gulf of Thailand: Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao, making it ideal for island-hopping holidays.

Wear Appropriate Shoes

Make sure to wear sports shoes or closed-toe shoes, not flip-flops. It will be crowded during the Thailand Full Moon Party, and the beach will later be littered with broken glass and trash, making it easy to cut your feet.

Drink With Caution & Not More

Do not drink directly from the communal buckets. The drinks are strong and sweet, prone to causing hangovers, and it is difficult to prevent the risk of others adding unknown substances. It is best to buy sealed bottled drinks.

No Swimming in the Sea After Drinking at Night

The tides and currents are extremely dangerous on a full moon night, and visibility is extremely low at night. So don't swim in the sea, especially after drinking, which is extremely fatal.

Don't Bring Any Valuables or Many Things

Do not bring any valuables or large amounts of cash to the party, because it is easy to lose them in the crowded environment. Just bring basic cash and your room card, and enjoy the carnival with peace of mind.

Confirm Return Transportation in Advance

It will be difficult to find a boat after the carnival of Thailand Full Moon Party ends in the early morning. Make sure to book a return boat in advance or determine your mode of transportation.

Koh Phangan

If you plan to join in the Thailand Full Moon Party all night, staying near Haad Rin Beach in Koh Phangan allows you to eliminate concerns about transportation, and return to your room to rest or store items at any time. It is the top choice for an immersive party experience, but remember to book well in advance of several months.

Koh Samui

For travelers who seek comfortable accommodation, do not want to stay up all night, or plan more exploration, staying in Koh Samui is the best choice. There are more hotel options with better quality. Remember to plan in advance and book your night ferry tickets from Koh Phangan to Koh Samui. If you want to enjoy more of the island vacation, I recommend staying on Koh Samui for a few more days.

Songkran Water Festival

Celebrated every April 13th to 15th, Songkran Water Festival is the traditional Thai New Year. People splash water on each other, symbolizing the washing away of bad luck and misfortune from the past year, and praying for peace and good fortune in the New Year.

Loy Krathong: Water Lantern Festival

In 2025, Loy Krathong Water Lantern Festival will be on November 5th. People make or buy "Krathong" (usually made of banana leaves, flowers, and candles), and put them into rivers, lakes, or canals at night while making a wish. The water lanterns will drift, symbolizing the removal of bad luck and troubles.

Yi Peng: Sky Lantern Festival

Yi Peng Sky Lantern Festival will be celebrated from November 5th to 6th in 2025, mainly held in Chiang Mai. People will release thousands of "Khom Loi" into the night sky, symbolizing sending away bad luck, releasing troubles, and praying for good luck.
