Planning the Perfect Honeymoon in Portugal
Trying to plan a romantic Portugal tour with your partner? Below, you'll find all the info you need, from the best Portugal honeymoon destinations and ideas on some of the most romantic things to do, to a detailed 10-day itinerary (based on firsthand experience) that'll help you make the most of your once-in-a-lifetime holiday.
Why Honeymoon in Portugal
My partner and I have visited just about every European country at this point, and I can honestly say that the laid-back yet utterly romantic vibe of Portugal is unparalleled.
The locals are warm and welcoming, the weather is divine, and the prices are some of the most affordable you'll find in all of Western Europe. What's more, the country is so diverse that you're guaranteed to find someplace you'll love no matter your (or your loved one's) preferences.
The slow-paced life and little moments like walking hand-in-hand through Lisbon's Alfama district, sipping wine by the Douro River, and enjoying golden sunsets in the Algarve will make you feel like you're in your very own romance movie.

Choose the Ideal Departure Time
Though I've always considered Portugal a year-round destination, newlyweds still need to time their honeymoon carefully, especially if you have a certain vision in mind.
Here's what you need to know:
- Spring (April to June): Mild weather, blooming landscapes, and fewer tourists - the best time for sightseeing and outdoor activities (and very romantic).
- Fall (September to October): The summer crowds fade, but the weather is still lovely (we chose September for our trip and had a blast). Vineyards are also at their most beautiful during harvest.
- Summer (July to August): Great for beach lovers, but expect hotter temps and more tourists, especially in bigger cities and coastal areas.
- Winter (November to March): Quiet, moody, and romantic - ideal for Porto and wine country, but the weather can be a bit temperamental. It's notably cheaper, though, so keep that in mind if you're on a tighter budget.
Popular Honeymoon Places in Portugal
Now that we've covered timing, let's look over some of the best honeymoon spots in Portugal to help you decide where to go based on your dream holiday:
Lisbon
Best for: City vibes with a romantic twist
Lisbon is a honeymooner's dream (and a must-see, in my opinion). Charming cobbled streets, pastel-colored buildings, and sweeping views from hilltops make it perfect for wandering and getting lost in the moment together. And remember, you won't want to miss a sunset sail along the Tagus River or a traditional Fado music dinner with your loved one.
Sintra
Best for: Fairytale romance
Sintra, just 40 minutes from Lisbon, is the place you go for that fairytale-like feel and the most jaw-dropping pictures. Think lush forests, misty hills, and colorful palaces - the Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are your ideal vision for memory photos.
Palacio Pena in Sintra, Portugal
Douro Valley
Best for: Wine and nature lovers
Home to Portugal's most famous wine region, the Douro Valley promises river cruises, vineyard tours, and candlelit dinners in rustic estates. Here, you can sip port wine together while watching the sunset over rolling hills - it doesn't get any better than that.
Porto
Best for: A cozy, artsy getaway
If you're craving that city feel but still want to keep things cozy and intimate, you can't go wrong with Porto. Colorful riverfront houses, mom-and-pop cafés, and lively markets make the city a dream to experience with a loved one beside you. Oh, and take a boat ride along the Douro River or tour the city's historic cellars - you won't be disappointed.
Livraria Lello, Porto
The Algarve
Best for: Beachfront luxury
Portugal's southern coast is nothing short of a slice of paradise. If you're coming here, though, I'd recommend going all out. Stay in a cliffside villa, try stand-up paddleboarding together, and treat yourself to some incredible spa treatments.
Madeira
Best for: Nature lovers
Often called the "Hawaii of Europe," Madeira is perfect for honeymooners who want to look beyond the thriving city scene of Lisbon. Here, couples can attend the Madeira Flower Festival in spring, hike together along levada trails, and enjoy breathtaking viewpoints like Cabo Girão. Go looking for secluded waterfalls, unwind in the natural lava pools of Porto Moniz, or go on a dolphin-watching tour off the coast. Make sure to include a romantic cable car ride in Funchal and a wine tasting session in your itinerary, too.
Top Honeymoon Things to Do in Portugal
Your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so you'll want to make sure that your time in Portugal involves activities that go beyond your typical sightseeing sessions - things that'll help you create lifelong memories with your loved one. If you're feeling stuck with ideas, don't worry. I've got a handy list right here of some of the top honeymoon things to do in Portugal:
Wine tasting
Nothing says romance like sipping wine in one of the oldest wine regions in the world. And the choices are endless - you can join a guided tasting, go on a wine-themed cruise along the Douro River, or DIY your own route by car. Either way, it'll be relaxing, scenic, and a true bonding experience.

Explore historic castles and palaces
Every honeymooner has the right to feel like royalty. And the best way to do that? Exploring some of Portugal's incredible castles and palaces. From Pena Palace in Sintra to Guimarães Castle in the north, these places will help make your honeymoon all the more special.
Sunset sailing in the Algarve
Aboard one of the many local catamarans or sailboats, cruise along the gorgeous coastline with a glass of bubbly as the sun dips into the Atlantic. Perfect for just soaking up each other! And while here, why not find a secluded beach (there are plenty) and enjoy a private picnic, a morning dip, or a quiet evening listening to waves crash - this will be one of the best memories of your entire trip.

Cooking class in Lisbon
If you're looking for something more active (and practical), why not learn how to make traditional dishes like bacalhau (salt cod) or pastel de nata (custard tart) together? It's one of the best, most interactive ways to connect with Portugal's incredible culinary culture.

Honeymoon Tips in Portugal
My partner and I had the most incredible time in Portugal, and because we loved the country so much, and recommend it to just about anyone who'll listen (as well as plan to come back ourselves). For your perfect honeymoon in Portugal, we made some mental notes on ways to make a trip here even more seamless.
- Pack for all seasons: Even in the summer, evenings can get chilly in Porto and Sintra.
- Dine late: The locals eat dinner around 8 - 9 PM. Embrace it and enjoy the lively night scene.
- Don't overschedule: Portugal is best enjoyed slowly. Leave room in your itinerary for spontaneous detours or lazy mornings.
- Stay centrally: Especially in Lisbon or Porto, you'll want to choose accommodations in walkable areas to save time and energy.
- Learn a few Portuguese phrases: A simple "obrigado/obrigada" (thank you) goes a long way, and locals really appreciate the effort.
- Book early: Especially if you're moving between Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve. Prices rise fast, and rooms and seats fill up.
- Splurge strategically: Portugal is relatively affordable, so use those savings to splurge on a romantic dinner or an upgraded hotel room with a view - it makes all the difference! If possible, I'd also recommend getting a rental car. The train system is good, but this way, you just get so much more flexibility, especially in Douro and the Algarve.
Also - don't be surprised if locals assume you're on your honeymoon and treat you extra kindly. One older woman in a tiny bakery gave us a free pastry "for love!" and told us we were blessed. It's those little moments that make Portugal unforgettable.
