Morocco in April: What's the Weather Like & What to Do

April is one of the sweetest times to visit Morocco. The spring sunshine is warm but not too hot, wildflowers are in full bloom, and the mild weather makes it perfect to travel around. If you are expecting to see Morocco at its best, April is a month you don't want to miss.

April is also a peak season, so it's crucial to make plans ahead of time. In this guide, I'll show you the best things to do in April, what the weather really feels like, and some insider tips to help you plan a memorable trip to Morocco.

Spring weather in Morocco is pleasant. Temperatures are warming up from winter, and the summer heat is yet to come. Most of April is sunny, and days are getting longer, so you'll have plenty of time for outdoor exploration. You won't see much rain, but I would still recommend bringing rain gear in case of showers.

If you're planning to visit Morocco's popular cities, such as Casablanca, Rabat, or Fez, you can expect daytime temperatures in April to range from 23°C to 27 (73-81°F). One thing to keep in mind is that nights there can cool down to around 12°C (54°F). So, it's best to dress in layers: a breathable shirt for daytime sun, paired with a light sweater and jacket for evenings.

April is also a wonderful time for coastal travel. In cities like Essaouira, daytime temperatures are slightly cooler, usually between 20°C and 22°C (68-72°F), making it ideal for seaside walks and relaxed lunches overlooking the ocean.

If you are interested to see natural wonders such as the Sahara Desert and Atlas Mountains, April offers good weather conditions. In the Sahara, near Erg Chebbi, daytime temperatures often reach around 27-30°C (81-86°F), while desert nights can drop to 10°C (50°F). In the Atlas Mountains, daytime temperatures in valleys are typically around 15-22°C (59-72°F). Snow remains on the highest peaks, while lower valleys are turning green under the spring sun.

Destination Temperature Rainy Days Humidity
Rabat 12-21℃ (54-70°F) 5 74%
Casablanca 12-22℃ (54-72°F) 5 69%
Fes 10-22℃ (50-72°F) 7 63%
Marrakech 10-25℃ (50-77°F) 4 54%
Atlas Mountains 10-22℃ (50-72°F) 5 71%
Sahara Desert 10-30℃ (86-50°F) Almost no rain 12%

April marks the beginning of the peak season, but the crowds still keep in a moderate level. Generally, Morocco is not a place that gets overly crowded, except during major holidays such as Christmas and the New Year.

The cost of traveling in Morocco in April is also moderate. Although flights and hotels are typically about 10-30% higher than in the low season, prices are still reasonable, and you can enjoy better weather. For example, staying at a premium four-star hotel in Marrakech for one night usually costs between USD 140 and 200. In addition, Morocco's main tourist cities offer a wide range of hotels to suit different budgets, so you don't need to worry too much about costs.

Anyway, be sure to book flights and accommodations at least 2 months in advance to secure better options and rates.

Step Into the Medina of Marrakech

If there's one place to open the door to Morocco, it's Marrakech. With a kaleidoscope of colors and rich culture, this is a place to awaken all your senses in an instant.

Start your day exploring the intricate courtyards of the Bahia Palace (open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily). It's best to arrive early to avoid group crowds that usually come by 11:00 AM.

By afternoon, wander through the medina, and you will find various small stalls with handicrafts, spices, and street food. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, as the car cannot reach within the medina. If you want to fully immerse yourself and explore hidden corners, there will be plenty of walking. Of course, you don't have to push yourself too hard, as there are so many places to take a break. Rooftop restaurants, bars, and cafés, just choose one that you like at sunset, and enjoy the golden hour of the Red City.

Explore the Atlas Mountains

Visit the Atlas Mountains in April, and you'll see them at their most beautiful. Snow still caps the highest peaks while valleys begin to bloom with wildflowers. A true highlight of the region is the Ourika Valley, a tranquil world apart from bustling cities.

It only takes 1.5 hours to drive from Marrakech to the Ourika Valley, and then you are rewarded with the beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural experiences. It is definitely a nice pick suitable for all ages. If you expect to experience a relaxed and authentic rural life, stop in the traditional Berber village, join the locals, and cook with them.

If you are a hiking lover, take it as your starting point to reach the Ourika Waterfalls. Before you start, make sure you wear comfortable clothes, sports shoes or hiking boots. Never wear sandals, as there will be some cobblestone paths on the way. For those who are not used to long walks, bring a hiking pole to ease your knees and ankles. If that still feels difficult, just skip hiking and enjoy local cuisine at the riverside restaurant.

Experience a Sahara Desert Camp

April is widely considered one of the best months for a Sahara adventure. The desert heat of summer has not yet arrived, making activities such as sandboarding, camel trekking, and dune walks enjoyable.

Spending the night in a desert camp is definitely one of the most memorable experiences in Morocco. The journey to the Sahara usually starts from Fez with a 7-hour drive. It means you will spend almost a day on the road. So, if sitting for that long seems intolerable, or if you are bringing young children with you, going to the Sahara may not seem that ideal.

But if you are okay with the drive, it is actually a beautiful road trip. You will see lush cedar forests along the way and the vibrant landscape of the Atlas Mountains. Additionally, I highly recommend taking a break in the town of Midelt during lunchtime. Splitting the long way in half will give you a refresh and ease your fatigue.

When you finally arrive in the Sahara Desert, you will realize that all the travel and effort are worth it. Standing on the golden dunes at sunset, it feels like you've entered another world. With almost no light pollution at night, the Sahara sky reveals an extraordinary display of stars. Sit beside the fire as locals play traditional instruments and dancers move to the rhythm. Above, the stars fill the sky in endless brilliance, and the moment feels just timeless.

Quick tips:

  • Bring a scarf to protect yourself from sandy desert winds.
  • Dress in layers. The daytime is quite warm, but at night the temperature can drop to 10℃ (50°F).

Wander the Blue Streets of Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is one of the country's most visually striking destinations. Its maze-like streets and staircases are painted in shades of blue, creating a unique and dreamy atmosphere. April is an especially lovely time to visit. The surrounding mountains come alive in green and form a vivid picture with the fresh blue.

The medina is a must-visit for photography. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds. At those well-known photo spots, you may be asked to pay around five Dirhams (about 50 cents) for each photo. But it's usually free once you get off the beaten track. Also, keep in mind not to disturb local residents when taking photos.

Chefchaouen is small, so it's easy to get around on foot. You can also take taxis, but you won't be able to reach the narrow alleys. The streets can be steep and full of steps, so it might be challenging for those with limited mobility.

Marathon des Sables

The Marathon des Sables is a 10-day ultramarathon across the Sahara, often known as one of the toughest footraces in the world (held from April 3rd to 13th, 2026). Competitors cover around 250 km of dunes and desert plateaus. You can also find other events with shorter schedules on their website. If you are interested in participating, be sure to prepare and sign up in advance.

The route of the marathon is scattered across the vast desert, so it's not the kind of event that you can watch on the sidelines. But during the race, you can still track the GPS of the athletes on the official website, or follow their updates on social media, which will also bring you an immersive experience.

Sufi Music & Cultural Festival

The Sufi Music and Cultural Festival is an 8-day celebration, held in Fes each April. It brings together musicians, poets, and spiritual leaders from around the world. Concerts and performances showcase traditional Sufi music, chanting, and poetry. It's a rare opportunity to experience Morocco's spiritual and artistic heritage in a fully engaging way.
