How to Get to the Desert Region

Generally, a Moroccan Sahara Desert tour starts in Fez or Marrakech. To reach Merzouga, the gateway to Erg Chebbi, travelers need to cover approximately 457 km from Fez or 565 km from Marrakech. Due to the long distance, the journey usually takes 7-10 hours by car and often includes stops at scenic viewpoints, such as the Atlas Mountains, Berber villages, and valleys across southern Morocco.

Erg Chigaga is usually not included in an essential Morocco tour route, as it lies much deeper in the desert and is less accessible than Erg Chebbi. You'll need to arrive in M'Hamid first, which is about 530 km and a 9-hour drive from Marrakech, and reaching the dunes still requires an additional 4x4 drive across rough desert terrain.

For transportation, private car transfers are most recommended since it is flexible in time and sightseeing on the way. The nearest airport to the desert area is in Errachidia. If you don't like long drives, you can consider taking flights to this airport to start a desert adventure, but remember to check availability since the flights can be very limited.

Where to Stay in the Sahara Desert

To spend a night in the middle of the desert, there are generally two main accommodation options: standard camps and luxury camps. We usually recommend choosing a luxury desert camp with good service and facilities. A nice luxury camp provides comfortable beds, private bathrooms, electricity, and even air conditioning, where you can enjoy more privacy and convenience. Standard camps are more budget-friendly, but facilities there can be quite basic, which means you may need to share bathrooms and toilets with others.

If you are not into camping, there are also some hotels to choose from, where the facilities are usually more complete and stable compared to desert camps. From most hotels in Merzouga, it takes less than 20 minutes' drive to reach the dunes, while some hotels are just on the edge of the desert and allow you to walk directly into the dunes on foot.

Things to be noticed: even in luxury camps or high-end desert hotels, conditions can still be different from staying in a city hotel. After all, you are in the desert areas, so electricity, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and hot water may sometimes be limited.

When to Visit Morocco's Sahara Desert
