The herds never stop moving, so where they are depends on the month.

From January to March, they graze the southern plains near Ndutu, where thousands of calves are born.

By June and July, they move into the western Serengeti, and from about July to October they gather in the north for the Mara River crossings.

In November and December, they head back south. Crossings can’t be scheduled, so no month guarantees one.

Every guest has a window seat, and the roof lifts so you can stand up for photos. Swapping is easy too: switch sides during the day, so everyone gets a turn at the best view.

Wear breathable layers in neutral tones like khaki, and avoid bright colors or dark blues that attract bugs. Dust is common on unpaved roads, so bring a light scarf, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a soft cover for camera lenses.

Since game drives and park transfers often last several hours, keeping water, snacks, and extra camera batteries in your daypack ensures a comfortable day in the bush.

Lions, elephants, buffalo, and leopards turn up regularly across the Serengeti and Tarangire.

The fifth, the black rhino, is the hard one, and Ngorongoro Crater is your best chance. Rhinos are rare and sightings are never guaranteed, but some visitors do see all five in a single day on the crater floor.

Many lodges in the parks are unfenced, so animals really do pass through. You might watch elephants at the watering hole from your pool, or hear lions at night.

After dark, staff escort you between your room and the dining area, so ask them rather than walking alone. Keep doors and tent flaps closed, and don’t leave food out.
