Bagan is an important piece of Myanmar's historical heritage. The Pagan Kingdom, the first feudal dynasty in Burmese history, was founded here in 1044. Since that time, the city has served as the kingdom's capital. Gradually, pagodas have been constructed in great numbers, Bagan has also evolved into one of the holiest cities in Myanmar. It's estimated that over 10,000 pagodas were constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries. In spite of battles and earthquakes, more than a thousand pagodas still stand, and there is a large number of ruins buried deep underground waiting to be excavated.
