It depends on your passport. Citizens of the US, Canada and Australia need an e-visa, which has been required since April 2025.
You apply online before you travel, the fee is about US$80, and processing can take up to ten business days, so apply a couple of months ahead.
Visitors from many other countries, including the UK and most of Europe, can enter without a visa.
Rules change, so check the current requirements for your passport before you book.

Do both if you can.
The Brazilian side gives you the wide view of the whole falls, with a walkway that ends close to the spray at the Devil's Throat.
The Argentine side has more trails and puts you right beside and above the falls, so you get closer and wetter. They are in different countries, so bring your passport and give each side its own morning.
If you only have time for one, the Argentine side feels more up close, while the Brazilian side is shorter and easier.

For seeing animals, the Pantanal. It is a huge open wetland, so jaguars, capybaras, caimans and giant otters are much easier to spot from a boat or safari truck than in dense forest.
The Amazon is richer in birds, plants and river life, and it’s the place to hear the forest wake up and paddle a canoe through flooded trees.
Many travelers do both. For wildlife, the Pantanal is at its best in the dry season, roughly May to October, when animals gather near the water.

A river cruise focuses more on traveling along the waterways and visiting communities or natural areas accessible by boat.
Your choice depends on whether you prefer a fixed base in the rainforest or a journey between different locations.

Rio's Carnival runs for several days in February or early March, with samba schools parading in the Sambadrome and street parties filling whole neighborhoods.
Come for Carnival if you want to be in the middle of it. It is loud, crowded and joyful. Hotels sell out and prices rise sharply, so book many months ahead.
If you'd rather see Rio's beaches, hikes and food in a calmer month, choose another time of year.
